An advocate and writer, he was a friend of the Goncourts and his books included Les Goncourt, Paris, 1889.

In 1891 he was enthusiastic about the possibility of Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother y101 being acquired a French public collection , and with Mathias Morhardt (1863-1939), editor of Le Temps, suggested that a 'comité illustre' could organise the purchase. This idea came to nothing.
