Douglas William Freshfield was a barrister and explorer. He married Augusta Ritchie in 1869.
Freshfield was called to the bar in 1870. However he does not seem to have practised and he instead travelled widely in the Alps, the Caucasus and North Africa. He became a leading figure in the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club and was editor of the Alpine Journal from 1872-80. Later he became a collector, purchasing a couple of lithographs by Whistler from the Fine Art Society in 1895.
