Identity:

R. W. McLeod Fullarton, QC, was the son of Archibald Fullarton of Glasgow.

Life:

Fullarton was a 'boyish acquaintance' of Whistler from around 1848. In the summer of 1848 Whistler visited the Isle of Wight and then went to school near Bristol. Fullarton may have been a fellow pupil there.

Fullarton was a poet and in 1865 wrote Whistler a poem inspired by Symphony in White, No. 2: The Little White Girl y052. He declared that it was written 'in the hope that you may find expressed in them [the verses] thoughts that may have arisen in your own mind, when painting a picture fitted to give so much pleasure to the few and so little to the many!' (#11005).

He was a member of the Arts Club from 1871 to 1874. He died at his house at 1 Holland Park Avenue, London. A sale of his collection of old masters was held by Messrs Foster in 1897.
