Identity:

Ellen Terry was an actress. She was briefly married to G. F. Watts, and lived with Edward William Godwin for some years. She had two children, Edie and Edward Gordon Craig. After she and Godwin parted, Godwin married Beatrice Philip, who after his death, married Whistler.

Life:

Ellen Terry was particularly associated with the Bancrofts and Henry Irving, and famous especially for her Shakespearean roles. She may have met Whistler through Godwin, and Whistler hoped to paint her portrait, but never did so.
