  • Date unknown: possibly given to Whistler's mother, Anna Matilda Whistler (1804-1881) or her sister, Catherine Jane Palmer (1812-1877), in Stonington, CT;
  • 1877-1933: passed by family descent;
  • 1933: discovered by Kate Palmer's grand-daughter, Lilian MacNeill Palmer (b. 1871) when she inherited the Palmer 'Corner House', Stonington, CT 1 ;
  • 1933/1936: acquired from L. M. Palmer by Elizabeth Robins Pennell (1855-1936);
  • 1936: gift of E. R. Pennell to the Library of Congress.
