Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1957: sold to Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
• 1958: bought by the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery on 15 January 1958.

It is not known if Whistler managed to keep this at the time of his bankruptcy, or if he or Miss Birnie Philip were able to retrieve it later.
