Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1957: sold to Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
• 1958: bought by a private collector;
• Before 1995: bequeathed to a private collector.

It is not known if Whistler managed to keep this at the time of his bankruptcy, or if he or Miss Birnie Philip were able to retrieve it later.
