Provenance

  • 1870s: acquired by Whistler's model and partner Maud Franklin (1857-1939);
  • 1936: Maud Franklin gave several works by Whistler (which probably included this and Maud on a stairway [M.0882]) to her daughter by Whistler, Ione Franklin Tyler (1877-1951), who died in Sausalito, California;
  • 1951: passed to her son Richard Tyler, San Francisco;
  • 1984: his estate was bequeathed to his wife, Adelle K.Tyler, and passed to her family, the Barnecuts;
  • 1986: bought by Knoedler's, New York dealers;
  • 1987: bought by Hope Davis, New York dealer;
  • 1988: bought by Elaine Marks and her husband Paul G. Marks (d. 2020), Boston, MA.
