Provenance

  • 1881/1886: probably acquired from the artist by Pickford Robert Waller (1849-1930).
  • 1918-1919: possibly owned by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938).
  • 1980: sold at auction, Sotheby's, London, 25 June 1980 (lot 183) as 'Portrait Study', bought by Michael Parkin (d. 2014), London dealer;
  • 1984: consigned to Knoedler's, New York art dealers, and sold to a private collector.
