Provenance

  • ca 1884: given by Whistler to Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942), according to the latter;
  • 1907: sold by Sickert to Obach, London art dealers;
  • 1907: bought on 22 October by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit;
  • 1919: bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.

Exhibitions

Although there is no record of an exhibition in Whistler's lifetime, it is very likely that it was shown in 'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', Second Series, Messrs Dowdeswell, London, 1886.

By the terms of Freer's will, this work cannot be lent to another venue.
