Bleu et or: Honfleur

Titles

Only one title is known:

  • 'Bleu et or: Honfleur' (1887, Petit). 1
  • 'Bleu et or: Honfleur' (1980, YMSM). 2

Description

Unknown.

Site

Honfleur, an old and important port and town in France.

Unfortunately there is no clue as to whether Bleu et or: Honfleur showed the sea, the port, or buildings, though the title might suggest the sea.

Grey and Gold: Honfleur, whereabouts unknown
Grey and Gold: Honfleur, whereabouts unknown

If Bleu et or: Honfleur is, as is possible, Grey and Gold: Honfleur [M.0988], then it showed the tall narrow houses along the side of the harbour.

Only two works by Whistler have been identified as done in Honfleur, Grey and Gold: Honfleur [M.0988], which may indeed be this painting, and a later oil, Brown and Gold: The Curé's Little Class [YMSM 455].

Notes:

1: Exposition Internationale de Peinture et de Sculpture, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 1887 (cat. no. 193).

2: YMSM 1980 [more] (cat. no. 361).
