Provenance

  • 1854: given to Paul Babcock Leeds (1835-1887) ;
  • 1887: probably inherited by his niece, Sarah Avery McIlhenny (1860-1948), Iberia Parish, Louisiana;
  • 1891: sent by her on 21 June to Whistler for a signature, but Whistler neither signed nor returned it;
  • 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
  • 1955: given to the University of Glasgow.
