Provenance

  • 1870s: given to the sitter, Isabel Marion Galsworthy (1841-1903) and passed to her husband, Frederick Thomas Galsworthy (1827-1917);
  • 1917: passed by family descent to the sitter's grandson, Peter Ker Pinching (1889-1948), who took the name Galsworthy, becoming Captain Peter Galsworthy of the Royal Fusiliers, Draycott Place, Chelsea;
  • 1948: bequeathed to his cousin, Diana C. J. Reid (Mrs Roderick C. G. Macleod).

Exhibitions

It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
