The butterfly on a farthing, woodcut, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies

This design (seen here in the woodcut made from Whistler's original (and now missing) drawing, was used for the tailpiece for 'Art and Art Critics' in Whistler 1890 [more] . Whistler was awarded one farthing damages at the end of the Whistler-Ruskin trial. The verdict was one of the primary causes of Whistler's bankruptcy. The drawing illustrated the final statement, 'Verdict for plaintiff. Damages one farthing.'
