Provenance

  • 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death, and bequeathed to his ward and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) ;
  • 1955: bought on 25 June by Colnaghi's, London art dealers;
  • 1955: sold on 18 July to a private collector, who gave it to her son.
  • 1986: sold at auction, Christie's, New York, 14 March 1986 (lot 94, repr.) as 'Steps in Algiers'.
  • 1990: with Hope Davis, New York art dealer;
  • 1991: sold to a private collector.

Exhibitions

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
