Orange Woman

Orange Woman is difficult to date. It has been dated variously '1881/6', '1890s' and '1896/1900'. 1

If, as is possible, it was the painting listed in 1884 as 'Nocturne: Black and Gold (No. 5) – Chelsea Stall', then obviously it predates that exhibition. 2 On the other hand the technique (as much as can be made out) suggests a later date.

Notes:

1: Dated '1881/6' in YMSM 1980 [more] (cat. no. 310). Andreeva, Galina, and Margaret F. MacDonald, Whistler and Russia, State Tretyakow Gallery, Moscow, 2006 (cat. no. 17). The authors had not seen it in 1980, but it has now been examined in person.

2: Listed in Dowdeswell papers, Rosenwald Collection, Library of Congress.
