Man shot from a cannon dates from between 1849 and 1851, and was given to Whistler's fellow pupil at Christ Church Hall, Pomfret, CT, Samuel Hammond (1835-1896).

            The traditional title is inaccurate: a man standing in front of a cannon has been 'shot' by a blast of powder, fortunately not by a cannon ball!
