On the right is a plump, robed monk holding a bottle in his left hand, in three-quarter view to left. At left is an unfinished sketch of a monk holding a baby, and at the bottom of the sheet, a monk at table.

• 1849/1851: probably given to William McNeill Whistler (1836-1900);
• 1900: bequeathed to his wife Helen ('Nellie') Euphrosyne Whistler (1849-1917), London;
• 1905: sold through Thomas Robert Way (1861-1913), London, to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit;
• 1919: bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.
