At left, behind the counter, stands a bespectacled salesman, showing a length of material to two elderly ladies seated by the the counter. To his left stands a young woman, and at far right, a young man in uniform (perhaps a messenger boy) looks admiringly at her.

The pen lines are varied in strength ((perhaps a quill pen was used), some being very fine indeed, with a variety of regular shading, cross-hatching and more vigorous zig-zag lines.
The earlier provenance is unknown.
It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
