A copy of 'Vicenza, North Italy' by James Duffield Harding (1798-1863), which was published in Sketches at Home and Abroad (London, 1836, frontispiece). Harding's original monochrome drawing dates from 1834 and is in Tate Britain. 1
The original was monochrome, but Whistler may have had access to a hand-coloured impression.
It has darkened considerably.
Lazelle was born in Enfield, MA, son of Joseph amd Roxanna Laselle or Lazell. Unlike Whistler, he graduated from West Point in 1855. During the American Civil War he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the 8th Infantry Regiment. He resigned from the army in 1864. He married Ann Rebecca Gooding Hollingsworth (1836–1893) and they had two sons, Jacob Hollingsworth Gaines Lazelle (1866-1898) and Horace Gibbs Lazelle (1870-1957). He died in Canada in 1917. Their younger son, Horace Gibbs Lazelle, married Martha Kemble Wentworth (1878-1973), and they had one daughter, Barbara Hollingsworth Lazelle (1907-2004).
See MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 143).
It was not, as far as is known, exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
