It is not certain that the sketches are by Whistler although family tradition suggests that some are.

Provenance
- 1854: owned by Alexander Stewart Webb (1835-1911);
- 1911: bequeathed to one of his daughters (Helen L. Alexander; Elizabeth Remsen Webb, Anne Remsen Webb, Jr, Caroline Le Roy Webb, Louisa De Peyster Webb, Evalene Loa Webb) and passed by family descent to a private collection.
