History
Provenance
-
1854: given to Henry Coppée (1821-1895), West Point;
-
1895: bequeathed to his daughter Ellen Marion Coppée (1854-1881), who married William Wharton Thurston (1852-1890), nephew of Joseph Wharton (1826-1909);
-
1890: probably inherited by their children, Edward Coppée Thurston (1874–1928), Joseph Wharton Thurston (1876–1947), and William Wharton Thurston (1878–1944);
-
1908: accepted in payment of debts by Joseph Wharton (1826-1909);
-
1909: bought from his estate by his daughter Anna, Mrs Harrison Smith Morris (1868-1957);
-
1957: passed by family descent to a private collection;
-
1993: sold by G. J. S. White, Newport Estates Auction, Rhode Island, 11 August 1993 (lot 102, repr.) and bought by Richard E. Blodgett Jr.
The family relationships are complex and it is not absolutely certain what happened to the picture between 1890 and 1908. See further details in MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 174); this record has been revised.
