A man's head, in profile to left. Although known as 'a monk' the neat beard and full head of hair, and the neat collar, suggest a courtier.

Provenance
- 1856/1857: given by the artist to his brother William McNeill Whistler (1836-1900);
- 1857/1858: given to his mentor, Dr James Darrach (1828-1869), Philadelphia;
- 1869-present: passed by family descent to a private collector.
