It is known only from the reproduction by Thomas Robert Way (1861-1913), who gave it the title 'Sketch for one of the six projects'. 1 However, none of the extant 'Projects' show a group similar to this.
Whistler was in communication with Wilde between 1881 and 1890. The 1911 sale catalogue records the provenance noted above, but there is no other proof of it.
There is no record of an exhibition in Whistler's lifetime.
