It was described by Cary as a 'Woman in long classic transparent draperies, blue cap. Stands with one arm resting on a shelf, the other hanging by her side.' 1

The figure was delicately drawn with black and illuminated with white chalk. The model's face was left undefined.

- Date unknown: with William Macbeth, New York art dealer.
- Date unknown: owned by Bertha Honoré Palmer (1849-1918), wife of Potter Palmer (1826-1902), Chicago;
- 1918-2003: by descent to Potter Palmer, Jr (1875-1943) and his wife Pauline Blake Kohlstaat (1882-1956), their son Potter Palmer III (1909-1946) and his wife Rose Movius Palmer (1909-2003);
- 2003-2006: with the Palmer estate;
- 2006: sold at auction, Christie's, New York, 30 November 2006 (lot 65).
- 2013: given by Peter H. Lunder (b. 1933) and Paula Crane Lunder (b. 1935) to Colby College Museum of Art.
