It was known in 1904 as 'La Japonaise' or 'Japanese Parasol'. It may have been one of several studies of wind-blown draped women, for such figure compositions as Sea Beach and Figures m0384 and Design for a fan m0392.

History

Provenance

• Before 1904: owned by James Staats Forbes (1823-1904);
• 1905: bought through William Stephen Marchant (1868-1925), London art dealer, by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit;
• 1919: bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.

Exhibitions

• 1904-1905: Pictures presented to the City of Dublin to form the Nucleus of a Gallery of Modern Art, also pictures lent by the executors of the late James Staats Forbes and others, Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, 1904 (cat. no. 256).

This may have been La Japonaise m0394.
