Provenance

• Until 1904: owned by James Staats Forbes (1823-1904);
• 1905: one of 14 drawings bought on 24 July from the Executors of J. S. Forbes through William Stephen Marchant (1868-1925), London dealer, by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) of Detroit;
• 1919: bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.
