Description
There was a figure composition on the verso, described as 'a sketch for a very elaborate composition. A figure descends a flight of stairs to greet another figure sitting at the bottom. On a raised seat in the background are three other figures very classic in feeling.' 1

- By 1905: owned by Sir James Thomas Knowles (1831-1908);
- 1908: sold at auction, Knowles sale, Christie's, London, 27 May 1908 (379) as "A Nude Female Figure' and bought by 'Amor'.
Neither the early nor later provenance is known.
