On the wall at right is a full-length painting of a woman with a large parasol, which does not represent any known painting. The composition is similar to that in several drawings, including A Chinese lady with a parasol m0459, and two later drawings, Design for a Mosaic m1226 and The Japanese Dress m1227. These are thought to be related to designs for a Gold Girl m0461, which was first mentioned in 1872: a subject to which, it appears, Whistler repeatedly returned. 2
