Conservation History
The envelope has a heavy mourning border, possibly in memory of Swinburne's father Admiral Charles Henry Swinburne (1797–1877) who had died in March 1877.

- 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law and executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
- 1955: given to the University of Glasgow
