Date

Bridge was originally thought to date from about 1878. The cursory signature on the drawing suggests a later date. If, as is possible, it is intended to represent old Battersea Bridge, it may date from 1887, or the following years, leading up to its demolition in 1890.

It is known only from a photograph. There seem to be some inconsistencies of style but it is slight and probably incomplete.

History

Provenance

The early provenance is not known.

It is possible that it was a drawing 'Putney bridge' from the collection of Howard Mansfield (1849-1938), which was sold at auction, Parke-Bernet, New York, 31 October 1945 (lot 295).

Exhibitions

It has not, as far as is known, been exhibited.
