
Flowers was drawn on the back of the draft of a letter from Whistler to the editor of the Pall Mall Gazette,late in 1879, or during the following year, when Whistler was in Venice. 1 The letter has nothing to do with the drawing.

The flowers are either water-lilies or cyclamen.
The letter is on the first side of the letter (which is unrelated to the sketch), the drawing on the second side, sideways on to the letter. The sheet was folded in quarters and the folds are dirty.
It has not been exhibited.
