The Rio de le Erbe, off the Grand Canal, in the sestiere of San Polo, in Venice, Italy. Whistler was sitting in a gondola looking north to a little private bridge, and another bridge that originally crossed the canal to the Campiello de le Erbe, but is now demolished. 1
