The Rio de le Erbe, off the Grand Canal, in the sestiere of San Polo, in Venice, Italy. Whistler was sitting in a gondola looking north to a little private bridge, and another bridge that originally crossed the canal to the Campiello de le Erbe, but is now demolished. ¹

• 1891: sold to Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932), New York dealer;
• By 1912: owned by his brother, David A. Kennedy (fl. 1895-1915).
