The pastel is drawn over another subject, the facade of a palace with a figure standing in an arched doorway, and at least two rows of windows above it.
History

- 1882: selected by Whistler for Louisine Waldron Havemeyer (1855-1929);
- 1917: given to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit;
- 1919: bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.
