It appears to have been drawn over another drawing, drawn with the paper the other way up, for a window over an archway is visible upside down at the top of the sheet. See MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 763).
Much of the early provenance comes from the 1942 sale catalogue, which adds that the pastel had been owned by Whistler's sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958); although it may be true, there is nothing to substantiate this. 2
No exhibition in Whistler's lifetime has been identified, although the imscription implies it was, at least, considered for an exhibition.
