It appears to have been drawn over another drawing, drawn with the paper the other way up, for a window over an archway is visible upside down at the top of the sheet. See MacDonald 1995 (cat. rais.) [more] (cat. no. 763).

Provenance
- 1914: bought on 13 March from V. G. Fischer, New York dealer, by Knoedler's, New York dealers;
- 1920: sold in February to Albert Eugene Gallatin (1882-1952).
- 1926: possibly with Scott and Fowles, New York.
- Date unknown: acquired by Esther 'Hope' Kerrigan (née Slater) (1892-1951), New York
- 1942: sold at auction, Parke-Bernet, New York, 9 January 1942 (lot 256, repr.) as 'Street in Venice'.
- Date unknown: bought by Mme A. Reine, France.
- 1962: collection of Mme Ausset, Paris, sold at auction, Parke-Bernet, New York, 21 March 1962 (lot 1) as 'A Street in Venice', and bought by a private collector, who gave it to her daughter;
- 1988: sold at auction, Sotheby, New York, 25 May 1988 (lot 64), bought in;
- 1989: sold at auction, Sotheby, New York, 25 May 30 November 1989 (lot 141) and bought by a private collector.
- 2007: sold at auction, Sotheby, New York, 28 November 2007 (lot 3) for $67.000.
Much of the early provenance comes from the 1942 sale catalogue, which adds that the pastel had been owned by Whistler's sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958); although it may be true, there is nothing to substantiate this. 2
Exhibitions
No exhibition in Whistler's lifetime has been identified, although the imscription implies it was, at least, considered for an exhibition.
