History

Provenance

The early provenance is not known. It is just possible that the pastel remained in Whistler's collection until his death, and was sold thereafter by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), but there is no record of this.

Exhibitions

There is no record of an exhibition in Whistler's lifetime. It is not, as has been suggested, Note in flesh-colour and red m0768.

Due to the conditions of C. L.Freer's bequest, the pastel cannot be loaned to exhibitions elsewhere.
