Neither the line drawings nor the signature look like Whistler's work. Only the small head at upper right could possibly be by Whistler.
History
Provenance
- 1879: according to Albert G. Reinhart or Reinhardt (b. 1854 ) he acquired this sketch, which Whistler had thrown away, in Venice;
- 1907: probably bought from him by E. Gottschalk (dates unknown), New York;
- 1908: sold by Gottschalk to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit;
- 1919: bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art.
