A scene in the sestiere of Dorsoduro, Venice, Italy: an archway off the Campo Santa Margherita leading to the Sotoportego e Corte del Calderer. 1 At the other end of the square Whistler drew the Campanile Santa Margherita m0773.

Grieve compares the composition to that of Pieter de Hooch's Courtyard of a House in Delft with a Woman and Child (National Gallery, London) of which Whistler had a photograph. 2
