Provenance
- 1880 or later: acquired by Thomas Way (1837-1915);
- By 1905: given to Way's son Thomas Robert Way (1861-1913);
- 1916: after his death, sold at auction, Sotheby's, London, 25 July 1916 (lot 79) as 'The Cloudy Sky, Venice', and bought by Agnew, London dealers;
- 1916: sold to C. W. Kraushaar, New York dealer, on 29 July.
- 1947: bought from Macbeth, New York dealers, by John Lionberger Davis (1878-1973), St Louis, in 1947;
- 1957: given by J. Lionberger Davis to the St Louis Art Museum.
