History

Provenance

• 1903: said by Colnaghi's, London dealers, to have been in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958).
• 1959: bought from Gilbert Davis (fl. 1955) by Colnaghi's, on 15 May (#23615);
• 1959: bought by Lilian Nairne Gregson-Ellis, Lady Tate (1901-1984) on 26 June;
• 1984; bequeathed to her husband, Sir Henry Tate (1902-1994), 4th Baronet;
• 1994: on the death of Sir Henry Tate, the picture passed to his estate;
• 2012: on the death of Sir Henry's son, Sir Henry Saxon Tate (1931-2012) 5th Baronet, the picture passed to his estate.
