Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1955: sold by Miss Birnie Philip to Colnaghi's, London dealers;
• 1955: bought by the National Gallery of Canada.
