
Hoxton may date from 1885/1886, and it has been suggested that it could be a preparatory study for Red and brown - Hoxton m1004, but it is not convincingly consistent with Whistler's technique.

The 1970 sale catalogue suggested that it had been owned by Walter Greaves (1846-1930), but there is no confirmation of this.
It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
