Date

Hoxton may date from 1885/1886, and it has been suggested that it could be a preparatory study for Red and brown - Hoxton m1004, but it is not convincingly consistent with Whistler's technique.

Although it has been suggested that this could be a preparatory study for Red and brown - Hoxton m1004, it is not consistent with Whistler's technique.

• 1974: sold at auction, Sotheby Parke-Bernet, New York, 23 May 1974 (lot 41, repr.), bought in;
• Date unknown: bought by a private collector.
• 2021: artmarket.

The 1970 sale catalogue suggested that it had been owned by Walter Greaves (1846-1930), but there is no confirmation of this.

Exhibitions

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
