Judging by the title, Note in green – The Garden Laundry, it was a view of washing hanging or being hung on a line in the garden.

Unknown. The Illustrated London News expressed 'unfeigned admiration' for 'The Green Laundry' [sic], and enquired how Whistler achieved 'that marvellous transparency of colour which he can throw at times into his sea and air.' 1

Provenance
- 1900: 'The Laundry', probably this painting, was sold by Alexander Reid (1854-1928), Glasgow art dealer, to John James Cowan (1846-1936), 2 but was not recorded in later documents.
