Subject

Description

Charles de Kay described it as 'a little brick-red "note" of a street in perspective'. 1

Site

Dieppe, a town, port and holiday resort on the French coast. Assuming Whistler meant the Place du Petit Enfer, this was between the Rue des Bonnes Femmes, Rue de la Rade and Rue du Petit Enfer: an area of old houses a stone's throw from the sea. A painting of the Place by William Nicholson (1872-1949) is in Fenton House (National Trust).
