The inscription suggests that this tiny drawing shows Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) but it is more likely to be her older sister Beatrice Philip (Mrs E. W. Godwin, Mrs J. McN. Whistler) (1857-1896), who was then married to Edward William Godwin (1833-1886).

History

Provenance

If this was owned by Whistler's son, which is possible, then it could have been inherited by his wife Sarah Ann Hanson (b. 1874), née Murray, who died in 1944, and their son Adrian Charles Whistler Hanson (1902-1967).

Exhibitions

There is no record of an exhibition in Whistler's lifetime.
