Lady wearing a dress with a bustle was drawn on the draft of a letter from Whistler to William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919), on 18 July 1887. ¹ The drawing is not related to the letter.

The letter is on three sides of the folded sheet. The drawing, sideways on, on the first side, is not related to the correspondence. It was drawn with sharp, crisp lines.

History

Provenance

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed to his sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1955: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.

Exhibitions

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime.
