The Prediction, Private Collection
Whistler gave this drawing to Théodore Roussel (1847-1926), who explained that it shows 'the suite of an adventure predicted' by Whistler 'telling cards'.

The figures were drawn with long curving lines; this looks more like the work of Beatrice Philip (Mrs E. W. Godwin, Mrs J. McN. Whistler) (1857-1896) than Whistler, but the butterfly signature confirms his work.
History
Provenance
- ca 1888: given by Whistler to Théodore Roussel (1847-1926);
- 1926: passed by family descent to his second wife's niece, Agnes Ethel Mackay (1889-1980);
- 1980: bought by the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and sold to a private collector.
