Whistler gave this drawing to Théodore Roussel (1847-1926), who explained that it shows 'the suite of an adventure predicted' by Whistler 'telling cards'.

The figures were drawn with long curving lines; this looks more like the work of Beatrice Philip (Mrs E. W. Godwin, Mrs J. McN. Whistler) (1857-1896) than Whistler, but the butterfly signature confirms his work.
