Windows was drawn on the draft of a letter from Whistler to Charles James Whistler Hanson (1870-1935) from September 1889. ¹ This is not related to the sketch.

It is possible that this tiny study was drawn in Amsterdam, where Whistler was making finely detailed etchings such as The Dance House: Nocturne [455].

• 1903: in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903 and bequeathed to his sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958);
• 1955: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.
