Rose Amy Pettigrew (1872-1958), probably with her niece. The sisters' older brother Alfred and his wife Jane had a little girl, Harriet Lilian, in 1885. Another baby, Ethel Jenny, was born in 1893: she remembered being taken to visit Rose and could therefore have been 'Baby Pettigrew'.
The tiny inscription, 'o', appears to have been a mark of approval, written either by the artist or his wife Beatrice Philip (Mrs E. W. Godwin, Mrs J. McN. Whistler) (1857-1896).
