The Paintings of James McNeill Whistler

Date

A house with a porch, and a lady in a long dress was drawn on the verso of a card inviting Whistler to the private view of the Society of Portrait Painters on 12 May 1893, which was forwarded to Ethel Whibley (1861-1920) (then Ethel Birnie Philip). ¹ The card is unrelated to the sketches.

The sketches are on the verso, the figures having been scraped out are very faint, and the card is slightly soiled.

History

Provenance

• 1893: sent by Whistler to Ethel Whibley (1861-1920) and probably passed to her sister, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who was Whistler's ward and executrix;
• 1955: given by Miss Birnie Philip to the University of Glasgow.
